The county of Clwyd comprises the pre-1974 counties of Denbigh and Flint.

"The ancient parish of Hawarden comprised the sixteen townships of Aston, Bannel, Bretton, Broadlane, Broughton, Ewloe Town, Ewloe Wood, Hawarden, Mancot, Manor, Moor, Pentrobin, Rake, Saltney, Sealand and Shotton. The parish was not part of any diocese until 1849 when it came under the wing of the Bishop of St. Asaph. In the nineteenth century and early in the twentieth other churches were built within the parish at Buckley, Pentrobin, Sealand, Broughton and Shotton. Marriages were celebrated at Buckley from 1841 and from 1874 its own district was assigned to the parish of Buckley. Likewise in Shotton where marriages had been celebrated since 1902 and which became a separate parish in 1911. The three other churches remain within Hawarden parish and marriages have been celebrated at Broughton since 1881. There are also recent churches at Sandycroft, Ewole and Mancot. The area of Saltney abutting Chester was transferred to the new parish of Marlston cum Lache in 1855 and a further portion of this area was lost to the same parish in 1904. Marriages in this list are confined to those celebrated at the Mother Church of Hawarden.".
