A history of the members of the Tom (譚) (T'an, Taam) family of Kay Sek / Jishi Village (奇石村), Guangdong Province, China, who immigrated to the United States in the 19th century, and their descendants. The first ancestor of the Guangdong branch of the Tom clan was Wun Deed (宏秩) (A.D.1007?), who is said to have been in the 33rd generation of the Guangxi branch of the Tom clan. Kay Sek / Jishi Village was established in A.D.1368. Kay Ling (奇嶺), first ancestor of the Kay Sek / Jishi Village branch, was in the 12th generation of the Guangdong Tom clan. The author's grandfather, Tom Duck Quon (譚德鈞), 29th generation, was the first to immigrate to the United States, known in Chinese circles as the "[Old] Gold Mountain" (舊金山) - a name given to this country during the California gold rush of the mid-19th century. The book provides: a short history of China and a historical timeline of Chinese immigration to the U.S.; a map of the Pearl River delta region of southern China pinpointing the location of Kay Sek / Jinshi Village; numerous portraits and other photos of immigrant ancestors and prominent members of subsequent generations; facsimile reproductions of relevant emigration documents and certificates; detailed genealogical charts; charts that record pertinent details of each immigrant's journey to the U.S. (name, 'arrival name', occupation, date of arrival, vessel name, INS file number, birth and death dates, naturalization date and certificate number); transcripts of interviews by US Immigration Service for admission to the U.S.; etc.
