Geo. W. Christmore, early settler of Howard Township passes away. George Washington Christmore was born April 12, 1828 in Frederick County, Virginia. Where he grew to young manhood and on December 20, 1853 at Winchester, Virginia, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth T. Findley. To this union were born 9 children, six sons and three daughters. Two sons and two daughters passed to the great beyond many years ago, his loving wife preceded him to her peaceful rest a little over three years ago. The living children are: W. B., J. F., and L. W. Christmore of the Trenton neighborhood, Mrs. Ida L. Gorbet of Kansas City, Missouri, I. N. Christmore of Coffeyville, Kansas, all of whom were at the bedside of their father when he passed peacefully away. In March 1871, he and his wife came with their family to Labette County, Kansas, settling on a farm on the Howard Township where the family spent many happy years together. It was at this pioneer home, on February 7, 1919, after being confined to his bed for 13 weeks that he departed this life at the ripe old age of 90 years, 9 months, and 26 days. In 1846, at the age of 17 years, at a camp meeting that was in progress at Whitehall, Virginia, he was convicted of his sins, and two weeks later at a Methodist revival, on the Winchester circuit, he was converted and in the years that have followed has tried to live a true Christian life. He remained a member of the Methodist Church until the year 1884, when his children were all converted and united with the United Brethren Church. Heart and hand he joined his children and has ever since been a member of the Trenton United Brethren Church. Besides his children, he leaves 16 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, together with a host of friends and neighbors. The deceased has been a member of Chetopa Lodge, No. 27, A.O.U.W. for many years and held a certificate for $2,000. The funeral took place from the Trenton church Sunday, February 9, at 11:00 o'clock Rev. J.T. Chambers preaching the funeral discourse, after which the remains were laid to rest besides his aged companion in the North Edna Cemetery. 'We loved him, yes we loved him but God loved him more, And he has gentley called him, to yonder golden shore. There came a breeze of heavenly love, to waft his sole away, To the clestial home above, where pleasures ne're decay. From trials of life on either hand, from quicksands of despair, Father's guided safely to Canaan's land, through ever fatal share. Father's anchored in the home above, on that celestial shore, Where dashing billows are no more, where tempest never roar.'" ------------------------- (Transcribed from History of Labette County, Kansas and its Representative Citizens, ed. & comp. by Hon.
