My father once told me that while  camping, John L and his family were approached by several men on horses.  They asked for permission to rest and told Eliza  Jane they would pay her well for a meal.  As she prepared the meal, the men rest.  Still John  L. Logan noticed they had posted a lookout.  After some  time,  the lookout approached  one  of the men.  They thanked the Logans, paid for their meals,mounted their horses and rode out of camp.  Within a short time,  a posse rode up and asked if they had  seen the Sam Bass gang...that they were passing through these parts.  John L. informed them of  what had just transpired.  The posse moved on but didn't seem to be in too big  a hurry to catch up  with the men.  

The Sam Bass gang were bank robbers.  Dad said one of the gang left.  He reported to the authorities about the next planned robbery - its location and how the Bass gang were planning on doing the robbery.  When  the robbery oc[#$@^!]rred, the gang was murdered except for the one who held the horses.  He escape.  Dad said he became a traveling medicine man dispensing medicine for the eyes.  He knew the gang member who had gone to the authorities had bad eyes.  Eventually the medicine dispenser  came to the  town where that defected gang  member lived.  He was approached by him for medicine, at which time the medicine man offered to put it in his eyes.  What he put in the man's eyes was acid and it  blinded him.
