Wisconsin birth registration index 1852-1907

Early registration of vital records in Wisconsin was incomplete. Most of the births occur from the 1850's.

These records are arranged in chronological order by birthdate. Envelopes have been marked to identify the inclusive dates of each fiche. The index does not show the complete date at the beginning. Many frames have garbled entries.

When the Birth index shows a "D" or a "DX" in front of a reel number (e.q. D00008 or DX00005) it refers to a collection of delayed birth records not to be found in this group. The library does have a collection of delayed registration from the years 1937-1941.

The birth records that go with this index are cataloged under: County -- Vital records.

The individual microfiche frame index of this index is incomplete. For each name the last digit for the frame location is missing (e.q. B 0 should read as B 01, or H 15 instead of H 1). Also, the first two digits after each person's name refer to the century and not an actual year (e.q. 19 Jan 13 means Jan 13 is in the 19th century and so could refer to any year from 1900-1907). This designation becomes meaningless in this index. The Unedited Pre-1907 Birth Index does not have this problem.

Usually a baby not named at the time of registration will be indexed under the last name only with the first name blank. From 1902 on, an unnamed baby was indexed under the father's first name with an F (female) or an M (male) as the middle initial. For example, Frank F. would be the designation of an unnamed female baby whose father was Frank.

All counties that begin with the letter "S' are indexed under the wrong county name as noted below: ST. CROIX INDEXED AS SAUK SAUK INDEXED AS SAWYER SAWYER INDEXED AS SHAWANO SHAWANO INDEXED AS SHEBOYGAN SHEBOYGAN INDEXED AS ST. CROIX.

In searching the Birth Records, the certificate numbers usually go to #3000 and then repeat with numbers 1 to 3000 again. The numbers are not always in chronological order. If a certificate is not found where you think it should be, search the preceding and subsequent series of numbers. The contents of a birth record include: name of child occupation of father color sex date of birth father's birthplace mother's birthplace mother's maiden name child's birthplace names of other issue name of doctor father's name residence of doctor.

Includes individuals with unknown birthdates. They are grouped together and listed alphabetically by county.
