PAULINA MUEHLBERG MAECHTLE, first [surviving] child of Carl Muehlberg and Wilhelmina Schubert; born August 21, 1853; died February 2, 1933; married September 25, 1873 to George Maechtle, born June 11, 1848, died February 1, 1928.

Paulina's early childhood was spent caring for younger brothers and sisters in the home. Schooling was very limited. The parents had received a fair elementary education in Germany and shared their knowledge with the older children of the family. At the age of 15 Paulina went to Racine to work as a maid to wealthy families, as most of the young ladies did during the winter months.

It is recalled that the young couple received a cow and a butter ladle as a wedding gift from her family. The father had passed away two years before. This butter ladle is a prized possession in the George Maechtle family today.

George owned 40 acres of land adjoining his parental home. There was a log house and barn on the place. His dowry consisted of two heifers, which helped get farming under way. At three different times thereafter they bought 40 acres adjoining theirs to make it a 160 acre farm. Twelve children were born to this union as follows:

1. WILLIAM MAECHTLE, born November 15, 1874; died November 8, 1941; married Otelia Boehm, born October 12, 1877, died June 16, 1953.

Willie was a blacksmith and farmer. The family lived on a farm near Edgar, Wisconsin, then at Plainfield, Illinois, and later at Necedah, Wisconsin.

Children:

1.1 Hilmer Maechtle, born June 27, 1902, died October 31, 1969; married Nellie Hill, born November 30, 1900.

He was a navy career man.

Children: (1) Hilmer Maechtle, Jr. born August 10, 1926; died June, 1944; (2) Warren Maechtle, born 1932.

1.2 Oliver Maechtle, born December 21, 1904; married Louise Mann.

Oliver is executive director of Boys' Clubs, Alexandria, Virginia. Louise is a kindergarten teacher. They are both elders in the Old Presbyterian Meeting House in Alexandria, Va., a church built in 1774, closed during the Revolutionary War and reactivated in 1949.

Children: (1) David Oliver Maechtle, born August 20, 1933, died June 12, 1952; (2) Diane Louise Maechtle, born 1935; married William Linkous, superintendent of a forestry camp for young boys Children: Mark Oliver Linkous; Elaine Sue Linkous.

1.3 Ruth Maechtle, born April 8, 1907; married Dr. Brad Tillotson, died December 11, 1963.

Ruth an RN in Chicago and Sidell, Illinois; Brad a physician.

Children: (1) John Allen Tillotson, born 1931; married Carlene Soelberg, department manager of interior design; (2) Robert K. Tillotson, born 1933, died March 13, 1937; (3) Janet Ruth Tillotson, born 1936; married Sheldon Haber, commercial artist; children: Leslie Ruth Haber and Susan Pamela Haber.

1.4 Violet Maechtle, born May 21, 1909; married Clair Gordon.

Residing in California.

Children: (1) Roger Lee Gordon; has served with U.S. Army in Germany.

2. VERENA MAECHTLE, born December 25, 1876, died May 7, 1954; married Louis Goehring, born January 6, 1871, died April 27, 1954.

Louie was a cheese maker and owned a cheese factory near Parnell, Wisconsin. Later the family moved to Naperville, Illinois, and finally lived on a farm near Pittsville, Wisconsin.

2.1 Lila Goehring, born May 9, 1902; married at the Little Brown Church in Iowa, Milton Sperbeck, born February 6, 1902.

Lila attended Milton College and taught in Wood County, Wisconsin.

2.2 Esther Goehring, born May 12, 1905; married Emil Truchinski, born August 9, 1900.

Gertrude was a teacher in the Wood County schools; Emory was a truck farmer.

Maurice was a chaplain's assistant in the U.S. Army; has a B.S. in horticulture and an M.S. in sociology from Iowa State University at Ames, a Ph.D. from Michigan State University; is assistant professor of sociology at the University of Kentucky.

Ellen is a graduate of Iowa State University; has an M.A. in sociology from Michigan State University with a major in family living.

2.3.2 Donald Voland, born 1934; married Jeanette Nero.

Donald was a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Air Force for 5 years with rank of captain; has a B.S. from Iowa State University in agriculture and business management; head pilot for Omniflight of Janesville, a crop spraying program. Jeanette is a beautician.

2.3.3 Judith Voland, born 1942; married Glenn Helgeland.

Judith has a degree in home economics from Iowa State University; a home agent in Peppin County. Glenn has a degree in agricultural journalism; managing editor of "Water Sports" and associate editor of "Wild Life."

2.4 Alma Gohring, born November 28, 1910; married Clarence Brooks, born August 24, 1904.

John Stallman, born December 3, 1882, died December 16, 1968.

John was born in Hohelbach, Austria; came to America at the age of 18; made his way to Little Falls, New York where he knew one family. Since he arrived long before dawn, he found a milkman who kindly escorted him to his destination. The Stallmans lived in Aurora, Illinois for some years, then on a farm near Climax, Michigan, followed by a move to Port Washington, Wisconsin in 1920. John was employed by Bolens Products Co.

3.1 Alfreda Stallman, born March 13, 1910.

Associate Professor of Classical Languages at Carroll College. Graduate of North Central College with a Ph.D. from University of Illinois. Has made 15 trips to Europe as a tourist guide or under a study program.

3.2 Ruth Stallman, born January 6, 1914; married June 20, 1936 Harold Knoespel.

Ruth a church organist for 23 years. Harold a district sales manager for Moorman Manufacturing Co.

4. OPHELIA MAECHTLE, born January 26, 1880, died November 21, 1953; married December 23, 1902, Levi Goehring, born November 13, 1877, died December 23, 1957.

Levi was a graduate of North Central College and Evangelical Theological Seminary at Naperville, Illinois. He served churches at Elk Mound, Iron Creek, Jim Falls, Cornell and Anson, Wisconsin. Besides being a minister he was also a building contractor, specializing in the building of churches and parsonages.

Milton has a B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin; Marguerite is an RN.

4.2 Lydia Goehring, born November 20, 1907, died November 28, 1937.

Lydia received her B.M. degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1933. She taught music in the schools of Cornell and Wonewoc, Wisconsin and Plattsburg, Missouri. Her untimely death in an automobile accident was a severe shock to all who knew her. Her parents, who were with her, were both injured, causing her father to be an invalid for the rest of his very active life.

4.3 Wilbur Goehring, born March 16, 1912; married August 18, 1937 Dorothy Turner, born June 5, 1912.

Wilbur has a B.S. degree in agronomy from the University of Wisconsin. Employed by U.S. Department of Agriculture four years, and Jacques Seed Co. Farmed 16 years and now works for 3M.

4.4 Merlin Goehring, born May 28, 1916; married Doris Douglas

Merlin received his education at the University of Wisconsin and Evangelical Theological Seminary. As a student at ETS he was known as the "Flying Pastor," since he used his plane to fly from Naperville to his field of work. He held pastorates at Eden, Door County, and presently at Lark and Reedsville, in Wisconsin. Doris is a teacher at Denmark.

4.5 Nelda Goehring, born February 28, 1918 at Elk Mound, Wisconsin; married Harvey Steinberg.

Nelda attended Stout College. Harvey a 1940 graduate of University of Wisconsin in the field of dairying. After 3 years of farming at Tilleda, Wlsconsin, Nelda and Harvey have been engaged in the restaurant business at Chippewa Falls and presently operate a "drive-in" at Campbell, California.

4.5.1 William Steinberg, born 1945; married 1968 Jennifer Wakefield.

William a 1968 graduate of the University of Wisconsin with degrees in geology and geography. Commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the Marines. Received his "Wings of Gold" March 30, 1970 at Corpus Christi. Now training at Cherry Point, North Carolina. Jennifer a 1967 graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a major in speech therapy.

4.6 Oliver Goehring, born May 3, 1920 at Elk Mound, Wisconsin.

Attended Stout State College and a short course in agriculture at the University of Wisconsin. Farmed until 1949 when he moved to Chippewa Falls with his parents. Presently operates a 9-hole golf course at Chippewa Falls and a bowling alley in Eau Claire.

5. ELLA MAECHTLE, born May 13, 1881, died December 17, 1957; married September 9, 1915 Ernest Klingbell.

Ernest a tool and die maker, employed at Cutler Hammer until his retirement in 1956. The Klingbells were actively engaged in church work during their 42 years of married life. Ella's family and friends remember her as one who was always ready to extend a helping hand to those who needed help. The rule she lived by was, "It is only right." There were no children.

6. ALMA MAECHTLE; married Christ Maier, born October 17, 1882, died May 11, 1924.

The Maiers lived on a farm near Sugar Grove, Illinois for some years. They then bought a farm near Battle Creek, Michigan, where the family lived until the death of the father. They then bought a farm near Jim Falls, Wisconsin, which was operated by one of the sons, Courtney, until 1969 when he retired.

7. ARTHUR MAECHTLE, born December 15, 1884; died October 9, 1961; married September 9, 1919, Selma Wagner, born March 3, 1895.

Arthur started to work as a cheese maker for Louie Goehring and Oscar Muehlberg. In 1909 he took up a claim near Oelrichs, South Dakota, where he spent 6 years. Returning to Wisconsin he farmed 80 acres of the George Maechtle farm from 1919 to 1940. He sold the farm and bought the Dalpe General Store at Waubeka, which is now operated by his two sons.

Arthur had an outgoing personality. He liked people and enjoyed conversing with them. He loved to travel and often remarked that the most comfortable seat for him was behind the wheel.

7.1. Ralph Maechtle, born October 7, 1921; married June 30, 1951 Esther Heilgendorf.

Operating a general store in Waubeka.

Children: (1) Paul Maechtle, student at Valparaiso University, Indiana; (2) Gloria Maechtle; (3) Alan Maechtle; (4) Rita Maechtle.

7.2 George Maechtle, born June 8, 1921; married Iva Mae Peter.

Operating a general store in Waubeka.

Children: (1) Sandra Maechtle, in nurses training, Columbia Hospital, Milwaukee; (2) Marcia Maechtle.

8. REUBEN MAECHTLE born October 3, 1887; married April 10, 1912 Edna Epp, born August 10 1890.

Reuben owned a cheese factory 2 1/2 miles north of Port Washington on the Moore Road. This factory was completely destroyed by fire in March 1914. He then turned to farming, but dairying was in his blood. He sold the farm on Moore Road and got a job in a Milwaukee creamery. The company transferred him to Lomira to an auxiliary plant. In 1929 the family moved to Fond du Lac, where Reuben was employed by the Borden Co. for 28 years. Edna a milliner before marriage.

8.1 Ora Maechtle, born September 8, 1913; married Darl Moore, born March 31, 1908.

Ora received her RN from the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing. Now employed as an industrial nurse by the Kiekhoefer Mfg. Co. of Fond du Lac, where the family has resided since 1952.

Children: (1) John Moore, born 1939, railroad engineer; (2) Lois Moore, born 1942; U.S. government employee, Washington D.C.

8.2 Lowell Maechtle, born August 10, 1915; died May 3, 1955; married February 25, 1939, Alyce Marks, born October 2, 1912.

Lowell entered North Central College in 1932. After graduation he received a scholarship to attend Oberlin Seminary for one year. He returned to Naperville and completed his seminary course. During most of his college and seminary years he worked at various odd jobs to "earn his way." In 1939 he represented the youth of the Evangelical Church as a delegate to the World Conference of Christian Youth in Amsterdam, Holland. He held student pastorates at Plymouth, Tomah, and Elroy, Wisconsin. He continued his education at the University of Wisconsin, receiving his doctorate in 1952. He taught sociology at Indiana Central, St. Olaf's in Northfield, Minnesota, and North Central Colleges.

Children: (1) Greyden Maechtle, born 1946; (2) Stephan Maechtle, born 1949.

Alyce was remarried to Chet Olsen and resides in Naperville.

9. SELMA MAECHTLE, born March 16, 1889; died May 25, 1965; married December 30, 1913 Albert Voge.

Selma was a student at the Music School of North Central College, majoring in piano and studying organ. She completed her certificate course in 1910, enabling her to teach piano. Selma and Albert were married just six months when Albert was drowned. She returned to Naperville to continue her studies besides other employment. In later years she married Sam Baumgartner, who died in 1943.

She devoted the rest of her life to the service of students, especially seminary students. Her spacious home was used for a boarding club. Over 400 young men received good meals and fellowship in her home. She was "Ma" to all of them. Her boys are scattered all over these United States and some are serving as missionaries in many foreign countries.

10. WESLEY MAECHTLE, born March 2, 1891; died October 7, 1957; married June 20, 1923 Mary (May) Kilian, born December 26, 1900.

Wesley received his education at North Central College and Evangelical Theological Seminary. His college course was interrupted by serving the government during World War I, where he sustained a severe rheumatic condition. He regained his health well enough to play football after his return to college. He received his B.A. degree in 1921 and finished seminary in 1923. He served churches at Prairie du Chien, Clarno - Staver, Prairie Farm, Elroy, Westfield, Batavia, and during his pastorate at North Fond du Lac he was summoned to his eternal home. May, who was the ideal "minister's wife," served as organist at various times. She now resides in Naperville, Illinois.

10.1 Gordon Maechtle, born 1925, married 1949 Eleanor Snyder.

Both received their education at North Central College. Gordon is employed as accountant at the First National Bank of Chicago. Their home is at Naperville. No children.

10.2 Mildred Maechtle, born 1929.

Mildred is a registered nurse and supervisor at St. Luke's Hospital at Racine, Wisconsin.

11. FREDA MAECHTLE, born September 16, 1892; married August 26, 1920 Earl Matthies, born April 8, 1893, died Sept. 14, 1964.

Freda was a teacher in the Ozaukee County public schools for eight years. Earl, born in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, attended business college at Manitowoc. He spent two years in the army during World War I as a musician in the army band. He was a salesman for Heinrich Chemical Co. for 12 years, and for 28 years, with his brother, operated the West Side Fuel and Supply Co. in Port Washington.

11.1 Virginia Matthies, born August 6, 1921; married May 20, 1944 Joseph Himmel.

Virginia, a graduate of the School of Music at North Central College, majored in voice. Joe received his B.A. from North Central, his M.A. from Northwestern University. He studied in Europe at various times. He taught in the Voice Department of Bowling Green (Ohio) State College and is now engaged in the same field at Northern Colorado State University in Greeley.

Children: (1) Michael Himmel, born 1952, a student at Northern Colorado University; (2) Peter Himmel, born 1953; (3) Susan Himmel, born 1958; (4) Sara Himmel, born 1960.

11.2 Jane Maechtle, born 1925; married 1948, Frank Dauner.

Jane is a graduate of the School of Music at North Central College with a major in music education and a minor in organ. She taught in the public school system in Aurora, Illinois. Frank received his college and seminary education at North Central College and Evangelical Theological Seminary at Naperville. He has held pastorates at Lake Mills, Janesville, Appleton and presently at Calvary Church (United Methodist) in Milwaukee.

Children: (1) Robert Dauner, born 1949, a student at Beloit College; (2) James Dauner, born 1952, a student at Cornell College in Iowa; (3) Daniel Dauner, born 1955.

12. ELMER MAECHTLE, born March 23, 1894, died July 4, 1955; married February 1, 1919, Rena Haberman, born August 10, 1898.

Elmer and Rena lived on the old homestead farm, five miles northwest of Port Washington, until 1929, when they sold the farm and moved to Fox Point, where Elmer was engaged as caretaker of the Joseph Uihlein estate. Rena, a great lover of nature and an avid traveler, now resides at the home of her daughter near Cedarburg.

Children:

12.1 Wilfred Maechtle, born January 8, 1920; married January 10, 1945 Elma Harrer.

Elma is a secretary in the Port Washington schools. Wilfred is employed in the Electronics Division of the Western Electric Co. in Milwaukee. During the Second World War he served with the armed forces in Europe and the Near East theater of war.

Children: Susan, born 1948. A graduate of North Central College with majors in psychology and sociology. Plans to go into exceptional education.

12.2 Kenneth Maechtle, born August 1, 1927, died April 29, 1946.

Kenneth was involved in a fatal automobile accident the week before his graduation from high school. Just before Easter that year at Shorewood High School portrayed the "Lord's Supper" as part of their Easter program. Kenneth played the part of Andrew, one of Christ's disciples.
