From The Woodford Sun, Versailles, KY,16 December 1906:

"Jas. R. Gay, Esq. died on Thurdsay morning, November 29, at fifteen minutes past 10 o'clock, at his home in this county, near Pisgah, after a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held at his late residence Saturday morning at 11 o'clock, the Rev. W.O Shewmaker officiating. The interment took place in the family lot in Pisgah churchyard.

James R. Gay was born January 19, 1828 on the farm where he died, which was settled by his grandfather in 1782 and which has ever since remained in the family. He was the second son of James and Catherine (Claggett) Gay. His father was born in the fort which was built on the site now occupied by the city of Lexington. His grandfather, John Gay, a native of Scotland, was one of the original settlers of Woodford county and one of the founders of Pisgah Church.

Mr. Gay was married in 1852 to Miss Kate E. Lamme, of Fayette county, who has been dead for some years. Eight children born of this union survive him: Jas. L. Gay, Mrs. Margaret Bird, Watson Gay, William D. Gay, Mrs. Mary Lee Mitchell, J. Horace Gay, Mrs. Carrie Garrett, and Mrs. Katherine Reading. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Wentworth.

Mr. Gay was a farmer during all of his life. He was modest and retiring in disposition, and a man of strong character, sterling integrity and kindliness. He lived an upright and useful life, and had the devoted love of his family and the respect and warm esteem of the community in which he had lived for nearly four-score years. Mr. Gay was a member of Pisgah Church."
