Adam B. Berend, age 75, lifelong resident of Windthorst, Texas, passed away Monday March 12, 2012 at his farm in northern Archer County. A vigil service and rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 15, 2012, at St. Mary'sCatholic Church in Windthorst. Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, with Rev. David Kraeger, T.O.R., Pastor of St. Mary's Church and Deacon Don Brown, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home of Archer City.
Adam Bernard Berend was born on March 13, 1936 in Windthorst, Texas to August and Eva Berend. After graduating from Windthorst High School in 1954, h e w orked i ndependently for several years in the cattle and hay hauling business. From the early 1960's until his retirement in 1 996, h e o wned a nd o peratedadairy farm, first as ac o-ownerw ithh isb rother August "Gus" Berend and later as sole proprietor of Adam Berend Dairy.
In 1963, Adam met Mazie Johnston, his future wife. Adam and Mazie were married on July 24th, 1965 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Windthorst, Texas and remained in Archer County throughout their marriage of almost 47 years.
Adam was actively involved in the Archer County and North Texas business communities. He was the current President of the JAC Electric Cooperative and current board member of the Brazos Rural Electric Cooperative; former-president of St. Mary's Parish Council, Associated Milk Producers Incorporated (AMPI), Archer County Farm Bureau, Windthorst Federal Credit Union and Wichita Valley Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA); former board member of Archer County Soil and Conservation District. He was also a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, Council #1824. Adam led an active lifestyle and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife Mazie; four sons, Jason of Dallas, Gary and his wife, Diana of Windthorst, Curtis of Windthorst and Brandon and his wife, Michele of Windthorst; one daughter, Chelsey and her husband, Shawn Price of Windthorst; two brothers, Gus and wife, Nellie of Windthorst, Andrew and wife, Ann of Windthorst; three sisters, Elsie Hoff and her husband, Marvin of Windthorst, Betty Humpert of Windthorst and Laura Spencer and husband, Jim of North Richland Hills; thirteen grandchildren, John Adam, Kirsti, Tanner, Darian, Mitchell, Braden, Trent, Lane, Ava, Zoie, Preston, Jake Adam and Alli Mae; numerous nieces and nephews.
Adam was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Poirot of Wichita Falls, Lillian Lindemann of Wind-thorst and one brother, W.A. "Bill" Berend of Windthorst. Serving as pallbearers will be his nephews: Gary Hoff, Tim, Kenny and Cliff Humpert, Tommy Poirot, Brad and Shane Berend and Jim Spencer. Honorary pallbearers will be all of his grandchildren.
