Clement Nance was born in Virginia, ca. 1756. He married Mary Jones, ca. 1775, in Virginia, and all of their children were born there, the first in 1776. In 1803, he and his wife and most of their children, and their children, left Pittsylvania County and settled in Kentucky. After remaining in Kentucky about eighteen months, Clement determined to press on to Indiana Territory. They settled just below the present site of New Albany, Indiana. Clement later moved to the western part of Franklin township. His will was probated 14 August 1828. Descendants lived in Indiana, Illinois, Texas and elsewhere.

Also includes the families of Zachariah Nance (d. 1772 of Charles City County, Virginia); David Nance (soldier in the Revolution, of Virginia); William Nance (of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia); Richard Nance (b. ca. 1714, of Bedford County, Virginia); John Nance (d. 1867, of North Carolina and Tennessee) and other Nance families.

Nance is also spelled Nantz.
