In order to locate ancestors in the Russian Consular Records, the following information must be known, or located through the use of an index: Eastern European soundex code number, surname, given/maiden name, state and town of residence, consulate & box number, folder/book number, document/page number.
"This volume is almost the only finding aid printed in English for those seeking family data on Russian ancestors--Foreword.
"Intended primarily for genealogists, this book is a name index to a portion of the Russian consular records... The material was generated by Russian consular offices in the U.S. and Canada during 1849-1926, the majority dating from 1917-1926. The major consulates included are New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle including the office in Nome, Alaska, and Honolulu"--Introd.
"All of the names in this index are arranged according to the Daitch-Mokotoff Eastern European Soundex, devised especially for the Russian Consular Records Project"--page xv.
