Henry genealogy, 1751-1950

Chiefly, a record of all known descendants for four generations of James Henry (1751-1792) and Samuel Henry (1762-1824). They were two brothers who were discharged near the end of the Revolutionary War from Hanover County, Virginia who migrated southward and obtained land grants in Washington County, North Carolina now Tennessee.

James Henry, the elder by ten years, settled on Little River at the mouth of Ellejoy Creek. In 1792, according to reports, James drowned while crossing Little River. He was survived by five sons and three daughters. The sons remained in the vicinity of Little River and two daughters are known to have lived in Anderson County, Tennessee.

Samuel Henry settled on Bakers Creek and built a fort and set aside not far away a plot for The Bakers Creek Church. The fort gave protection, to the Henry family and their neighbors, from hostile Indians. When Blount County was organized in 1795 Samuel Henry was one of the commissioners appointed by Governor Blount to select and lay out the site for the county seat to be called Maryville. When Samuel Henry died in 1824, he was buried in the Bakers Creek Cemetery as were also five of his six surviving children.
