John Hurlbut (1730-1782), son of John Hurlbut, a native of England, and Abigal Avery (1735-1805) were married ca. 1754. They had eight children. Lydia, the youngest, was born at Groton, Connecticut, in 1775. Her father served several terms in the Connecticut legislature and heartily supported the Revolution. Her two oldest brothers, John and Christopher, served in the army for a year during the Revolutionary War. John Hurlbut sold his farm at Groton to move to the Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania, in 1778. The family was delayed along the way due to illness and the death of one daughter. Before they reached Wyoming Valley, they heard of the Indian massacre there in the Battle of Wyoming. Her father purchased a farm at Shewangunk and lived there two year years, then sold the farm and moved to Wyoming Valley, where he purchased a farm near Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. He died there.
