The book covers the descendants of two separate Buchanan and two separate Gillespie families in southwest Virginia. James Buchanan was born ca. 1702 in northern Ireland to Alexander Buchanan. He came to Pennsylvania ca. 1724 where he married Martha Allison. Around 1743 he moved to Augusta County, Virginia, where his will was was probated in 1765. The second Buchanan line descends from John Buchanan and his wife Margaret. As early as 1739 they lived in that part of Orange County, Virginia, which is now Augusta County. His will was probated in 1790.

William Gillespie was born ca. 1720, probably in Northern Ireland. He lived with his wife Mary in that part of Augusta County which is now part of Alleghany County, Virginia, as early as 1746. He and his family moved to Washington (now Smyth) County ca. 1780. About 1783 he and Mary moved to Pickens County, South Carolina. He died about 1802. The second Gillespie line descends from Robert Gillespie who was born ca. 1730 in Northern Ireland. He lived with his family as early as 1754 in Augusta (now Alleghany) County. In 1772 he and his family moved near the present site of Clifton Forge, Virginia. His will was probated in 1798.

Related families were Allison, Lamie, McCampbell, Kennemur, Rankin, Barnes, Sexton, Wyatt, and many others. Descendants lived in Virginia, Nebraska, Texas, Kentucky, South Carolina, and elsewhere.
