"All commissioned officers in the state militia were appointed by the governor and the commissions were counter-signed by the Secretary of State. The commissioned officers were required to take an oath prescribed by the state consitution. Both the commission and the oath were then put on file. In case of promotion, the oath needed to be renewed and the new commission became effective from its date. Commissions ran at the pleasure of the governor in his role as commander-in-chief"--Guide.
"The series contains oaths and letters of acceptance from 1846-1874, notices of appointments from 1917 to 1920, and certificates of commission"--Guide.
