Full-Time Mission or Service Mission
Missionaries who serve in the Utah Salt Lake City Headquarters Mission provide service in all aspects of family history and Church history. Tasks, responsibilities, and time commitment vary depending on whether you are a service missionary or a full-time missionary.
The three primary purposes of the mission are as follows:
- Assist staff and guests of the Family History Department with research, records documentation, and FamilySearch training.
- Assist staff in the Church History Department to expand and preserve Church historical collections and make them available to Church members and guests.
- Support the efforts of staff in other Church headquarters departments.
Based on those three key initiatives, service and full-time missionaries may be given a variety of assignments. Below are a few activities that family history missionaries serving at the Utah Salt Lake City Headquarters mission may be involved in:
- Assisting patrons in person, by email, by telephone, or on the internet to do family history and Church history research.
- Acquiring and preserving family history records.
- Indexing names for temple ordinances.
- Resolving ordinance record issues.
- Working with oral histories.
- Providing training on how to do family history research.
- Processing digital records.
- Providing related documents to off-site patrons.
- Working with Church historical records and journals.
Skills Needed: Good interpersonal skills, basic computer skills, and a willingness to learn new skills are required. Language skills may be needed in greeting and assisting patrons in some areas of the Family History Library and Church History Library. Some opportunities require specific professional skills.
Time Commitment: Service missionaries commit to a minimum of 16 hours per week for at least one year. Full-time missionaries commit to a minimum 32 hours per week for at least one year.
Additional Information: Work shifts are flexible depending on the availability of the missionary. Service missionaries may take time off for vacations and pressing family needs. Parking is provided for all missionaries. Service missionaries are expected to serve during the open hours of their assigned location.
