Catatan

Elizabeth Dewey Follett and her family migrated to Wyoming Valley, Pennsylvania, arriving in September 1774. The first entry, dated January 1, 1775, reports that they are comfortably settled in their new home. She expressed concern about the colonies and their rights. By May, she reported the battle at Lexington and in June Bunker Hill. She rejoiced at news of the Declaration of Independence in July 1776. On June 27, 1778, she reported a peaceful valley and rose scented air, but a premonition of approaching evil. She distrusted the Indians, there were many Tories in the neighborhood and many men were away in the army. The next entry was made December 25, 1780. Her husband had been shot and killed by a Tory neighbor as he was swimming in the river. A short time later, Indians attacked; killed many of her neighbors; destroyed her belongings and burned her house. They did allow her to keep the poorest horse. She and the children joined survivng neighbors for a trip through unbroken wilderness to the nearest settlement, nearly two hundred miles away in Vermont. He oldest son, Martin, was her main support.
