George ‘Joris’ Woolsey and Rebecca Cornell, the parents of Thomas Woolsey, had arrived in New Amsterdam (New York) by 1642. George ‘Joris’ was a hard-working, Dutch speaking Englishman who was a natural choice as a mediator between the Dutch and English. George ‘Joris’ and Rebecca were living either at Flatbush or Jamaica, Long Island, when Thomas was christened when one day old, Sunday, 11 Apr 1655, at “Ye Englandish Church by Mr. Denton” Newtown (Middleburgh) at Hempstead, Long Island, Nieuw Nederlandt.”

Thomas Woolsey was the third child and second son of George ‘Joris’ Woolsey and Rebecca Cornell. He may have been named for his uncle Thomas Cornell, who was involved in a sensational murder trial of his mother Rebecca Briggs Cornell in Rhode Island. Thomas Woolsey grew to manhood in the Jamaica/Flatbush area of Long Island. Most of his schooling would have come from his parents and possibly the minister. He was the first Woolsey to leave Long Island and settled in Bedford, Westchester County, New York. He married Ruth, possibly Baylis and their children were all born on Long Island. They are the ancestors of many Woolseys throughout the United States and Canada.

1604 George Woolsey, app. of Nicholas Cuttinge, grocer (A).

1611 Philip, appr. of George Woolsey, grocer (A.).

I don't know who Edward Woolsey is, yet, the other three are brothers, and Philip Woolsey is the youngest brother, the three sons of William & Elizabeth (Stanhow) Wolsey. George Wolsey's record is interesting in that he was apprenticed in 1604, apparently served his term of seven years, as he is listed as a "Grocer" in 1611 and was taking on his own apprentice at that time. So he was pretty busy those years of 1610 and 1611. He was finishing up his apprenticeship, he probably married about Jan 1611 and had his first son born Oct 1611. Remember, this is George Senior, the father of our immigrant George Woolsey, and these are George's (the father's) brothers. See the notes on apprentices of George Woolsey, Sr. (the father) for interesting insight into George, Jr.'s own apprenticeship.

Here is my bio for Richard b. 1730. Jeff

Richard Woolsey 1730-1811 - Abigail, his wife, 10 Oct 1730-2 Oct 1830 By Jeff Miller April 19, 2011

Supposed facts about Richard Woolsey:

1. That he is a son of Richard Woolsey b. 1697 and Sarah Fowler. No documentation exists for this proposition.

2. That he was born in 1730. No documentation exists for this proposition.

3. That he married Ann Fuller. No documentation exists for this proposition. His son Daniel b. 25 Nov 1755 is also supposed to have married a woman named Ann Fuller but this is also wrong.

4. He died in 1811 in Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York. 1811 is the “traditional” date of death for the husband of Abigail 1730-1830. Richard Woolsey does appear in the 1790 census in Hillsdale but there have been no records definitively found for him after that date.

“Thomas Woolsey was born at Hemsted April ye 10 1655 & then Baptized by Mr. Denton”

SOME COMMENTS ON WOOLSEY-HALLETT RECORD FROM RIKER PAPERS by Harry Macy

This had to be compiled after 1664 as it refers to the city as New York, not New Amsterdam. Most likely William Hallett copied it from a Woolsey bible or other record after he married Sarah Woolsey.

Sarah was baptized in the Dutch Church on the date indicated; Mr. Denton at that time would have been pastor of the English Church in Newtown (Middle burg) on Long Island.

New Amsterdam Dutch Church records show baptisms of George, Rebecca and John but not all the dates match. They also show another daughter Marritie in 1664, not on this list.

The last two children's baptisms are in the Flatbush Dutch Church records in 1678, where it is indicated that they were not infants.

The birthdates of the Hallett children are in NYGBR 6:28 with one difference, and without the places of birth.

ALSO: "Searching for the parentage of Ruth Bailey who md Thomas Woolsey. She was probably born in the mid 1600's, maybe in NY." Note by www: There is much speculation here, in the absence of an actual record, but all the early Woolsey researchers give the above date.

He states that John Woolsey, s/o Thomas Woolsey and Ruth Bailey md. 1712 to Sarah Woolsey. From John's will we know his wife is named Sarah, but if she was a Woolsey, there couldn't be many choices as to her parentage. At this time, www makes supposition both to her maiden name and her parentage. (Note by www: there is much speculation here, but I don’t know where else to search.)

The old burying ground of the town is situated on the declivity near the Methodist meeting house in the village directly under Bates's hill - this spot was formerly a part of the "common" (of which only "the green" now remains), laid out in 2682. .... The ground contains many curious memorials.

In the Old Burying Ground in Bedford is a stone preserved underground for perhaps a century,& had recently been unearthed in the village graveyard. The graveward lies next to an old church that was burned down during the Revolutionary War; The inscription on the old stone reads: "1742 (next line illegible) Deceased Thomas Woolsey Born in the yeare 1656"

This stone was evidently left behind when bodies of the Woolsey family were removed to the Bedford Union Cemetery in the Nineteenth Century.

In Bedford, “The old parish grave yard llying on a declivity near the Methodist meeting house, contains many curious memorials. One is the marker of Thomas Woolsey:
