The Marriage of George Mason and Mary Ann Beard Aboard the Ship Taking Them to Zion
by Liz Mason
(note: this is a fictional skit, but they actually did get married on the ship)
Scene 1
G: (Swaying with the boat) Well, hello Sister Beard, it's a mighty fine day here on the ship, if I do say so myself . . .
MA: Yes (holding in sea sickness), very nice (holding in), day indeed (holding in), quite right (losing it over the ship side, hurries away)
G: What a gal!
Scene 2
G: (sitting cross legged with a bowl and spoon) Well, hello there Sister Beard, we sure have a creative cook, can't say I've eaten anything quite like this before, interesting color . . .
MA: Yes (looking doubtful about the bite she is about to take), very nice (deep breath) food indeed (big smile taking courage) quite right (hurries and swallows a bite, George gets up to leave, MA loses it, George doesn't see)
G: (to himself) What a gal!
Scene 3
G: (Joining MA as she gazes out over the water) You know, Mary Ann, I've been thinking, it's been a two weeks on this ship now, you and I both heading to Zion, you and I both being single, how about teamin' up, and making this adventure together? You could be my little lady, and I could be your man. What do you say?
MA: Well George, that sounds very practical but . . .
G: The President Martin said he could marry us tonight!
MA: Tonight!?
G: I KNEW you would just love the idea, being married on the ship and all, our children, and children's children, and children's children's children, will talk of the day for years to come how their first Mason parents to join the church and step on the soil of America got married on the ship that brought them here. Now that's a story they'll never forget!
MA: (with bewildered look) Children's, children's, children?
G: What a gal!
