Finding Women in Your Family History
Digging through the records to identify the woman who may not even be identified by a given name is an exercise in frustration, but not necessarily futility. Solutions can often be found if you know where and how to look. This lecture will look at the issues surrounding tracking women—the main one, whether in colonial period or the twentieth century, is that they are hidden under the cloak of a father or husband. Examples will range from the twentieth-century woman in Texas whose death certificate was issued and she was buried as Mrs. “John Q. Smith” to women in the colonial period named in a father’s will as “my daughter Mary” or later under “divided equally among all my children.” Emphasis will be placed on using what the law allowed or didn’t allow a woman to do at a given time depending on her status (underage, single including widows and divorcees, or married). The lecture will focus upon using both an understanding of the law and the information gained from records (both the usual and unusual sources) as well information from her known and proposed extended family to identify her. Brief examples will be used to demonstrate techniques.
This intermediate level class is sponsored by BCG and ICAPGen.
