Why is no camera icon showing for a digitized microfilm in the FamilySearch Catalog?

Share
In the FamilySearch Catalog, an icon of a camera with a triangle identifies digitized items with viewing restrictions or limitations.

At FamilySearch, we strive to provide access to as many genealogical records as possible. However, some digital content in the Catalog is restricted due to contractual agreements, data privacy laws, or other requirements set by record custodians. These restrictions are visible in the Film/Digital Notes section, where restricted content does not display the camera icon ( ).

Understanding access notes in the Catalog

Microfilms with film numbers and DGS (Digital Genealogical Society) numbers

Digitized microfilms are listed in the Catalog with both a film number and an Image Group Number (DGS). In the Format column, a film reel icon indicates that you can view the physical microfilm copy at a FamilySearch library or center.

Digitally captured records

Some records were never preserved on microfilm but were captured digitally. These records only display a DGS number in the catalog, without an icon in the Format column.
Note: Digitally captured records are currently inaccessible due to restrictions, and no physical copy is available.

Microfilms without DGS numbers

While all microfilms have been digitized, some entries lack a DGS number in the catalog. Microfilms without a DGS are still in the publishing process and not yet available.

Why access is restricted

FamilySearch is committed to making records available to patrons, but access is often determined by the decisions of record custodians and applicable privacy laws or contractual agreements

These restrictions are beyond FamilySearch’s control. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding as we work within these limitations.

FamilySearch continues to work diligently to provide as much access as possible while respecting these agreements and laws.
