Sharing names with the temple is an important means by which temple blessings are made available to Church members worldwide.
Some members cannot complete all of the ordinances for all of their ancestors. Other members cannot bring their own family names to the temple. Sharing names with the temple allows members to help each other with temple work.
What happens to names shared with the temple
When you share names with the temple, the names go into a backlog or pool. Then:
- Members pull names from the backlog in one of several ways:
- By using Ordinances Ready.
- By finding the shared name in Family Tree and reserving it.
- By receiving a temple name at the temple.
- The member who shared the name unshares it and then prints it for personal use.
- The ordinances are performed and recorded.
- FamilySearch sends a notification of the completed ordinances to the member who shared the ordinance and updates the sharer's completed ordinances list.
Advantages of sharing names with the temple
Sharing names with the temple has a few important advantages that you might want to consider if you have more family names than you can do:
- Names shared with the temple do not count towards your reservation limit.
- You receive temple notifications as the ordinances are done.
- You can unshare the ordinance and print it yourself unless another member has reserved it or a temple has already printed it.
