How do I update vitals in Family Tree using JAWS?

Blind or visually impaired individuals can use JAWS software to edit the Vitals section for ancestors on FamilySearch Family Tree. The article refers to the vital information as dates, places, or events.

To modify or add vital information, perform the following steps:

  1. Sign in to Family Tree at https://familysearch.org/tree.
  2. Go to the Details page for the person whose information you want to edit. To do this, use the Find link or the Person drop-down list, or move to the person in the Tree view.
  3. Move to the Vitals heading. You can use the JAWS Virtual Find command, Ctrl+F, or press H until you hear “Vitals.”
  4. If an event is already present, correct the existing information. Otherwise, add the new event.
  • To correct existing information, use steps 5 through 7 below.
  • To add new information, go to step 8.
  1. To edit existing information, press your Down Arrow until you reach the title for the event you want to modify. Continue downward until you reach the event.  For example, for the name Mary Smith, move to the Title of “Name,” and continue downward until you reach “Mary Smith.”
  2. Press Enter on the selected event to bring up your choices. You can edit or delete existing information. You can also close the list of choices.
  3. To find the Edit link, press the Up or Down Arrow until you hear “Edit.” The Edit link usually appears above the event being modified. If you reach the Vital Information heading or another event, you have passed the Edit link. In this case, press the Down Arrow until you hear “Edit.” To select this link, press Enter. You then land on the first field for the event. Go to step 9.
  4. If you are adding information not already present, press the Down Arrow until you reach the title for the event, continue downward until you reach the Add link, and press Enter to select this link. You then land on the first field for the event.
  5. Enter the correct information for the event. You can use the Backspace or Delete keys to delete existing information. To delete all the text in a field, press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+X. To move between the fields, use Tab. Enter standardized dates and places when possible.
  6. After entering the new vital information, press Tab to go to the field labeled “Explain why you feel this information is correct,” and give the reasons for modifying the information. Your reason can help prevent improper changes and direct other interested researchers to the sources that support the information.
  7. To move to the Save button, press Tab, and to save your changes, press the Space Bar or Enter.
  8. When possible, attach a source supporting the changes you have made.
