How do I create a GEDCOM file?

GEDCOM is a data standard that allows family history data from one computer program to be uploaded to a different computer program.

You cannot download GEDCOM files from Family Tree. The GEDCOM standard does not provide a way to store reason statements and other types of information that are crucial and unique to Family Tree.

Many FamilySearch third-party subscriptions have products that create GEDCOM files. Some of them also allow you to download information from Family Tree, make changes to that information, and then post the updates back to Family Tree. See the FamilySearch Solutions Gallery for information about these products.

If you already have one of these programs, see the help content or the vendor's website for instructions on how to create a GEDCOM file.If you have a GEDCOM file, you can upload a copy of your file to the Pedigree Resource File on FamilySearch.org. Uploading your file gives you these benefits:

  • FamilySearch preserves your file. You have the ability to delete or replace it later on.
  • Other users are able to see the information in your GEDCOM file but cannot change it.
  • You can copy the information that is in your GEDCOM file to Family Tree.
