How do I change the language in FamilySearch?

You can change and set your preferred language while using FamilySearch. As we add additional languages, translated screens become available on the site as the translation work is completed and if your system is set up to display that language.

Steps (website)

By default, FamilySearch shows in the same language that your browser is set to use. As needed, you can change the language setting:

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch.
  2. At the top-right corner in the header, click the world globe icon.
    Language Picker in Header Example
  3. Select from the list.
  4. Click Apply.

    Steps (mobile app)

The apps do not provide an option to change language settings. If your device is set to operate in a supported language, the app also shows in that language.

    Steps (Family Tree Lite)

Family Tree Lite is available in German, English, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese (read-only), Khmer, Korean (read-only), Malagasy, Mongolian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Thai, Chinese (read-only).

Note: In Japanese, Korean, and Traditional Chinese, Family Tree Lite allows you to view data but not add or edit it.

Family Tree Lite lacks an on-screen option to change the language settings. If your browser is set to operate in one of the supported languages, Family Tree Lite shows in that same language.

    1. To use Family Tree Lite in a different language from what your browser uses, sign in to FamilySearch.org.
    2. Scroll to the bottom of the screen, and click the language.
    3. Click the language that you want.

    Release plans

We are translating FamilySearch into more languages. Because of the new languages, we retired the Family Booklet section of Family Tree on 4 November 2019. The printed booklet itself is still available through Church Distribution.

We are translating these parts of the website into additional languages:

    • FamilySearch.org home pages, both the logged out home page and the logged in home page
    • Registration flow, account recovery, and settings
    • Family Tree
    • Temple, including reservation flow and card printing
    • Search
    • Memories
    • Messages

We are also translating the iOS and Android Family Tree apps into additional languages.
Selected help articles are becoming available in Thai, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Mongolian, and Indonesian. They will be delivered as PDF files through the country pages on the Church's website.

    Known issues

People who begin using the site in one of the new languages may find some screens or words on the screen that show in English instead of the language. This occurs because the translations are not yet complete.
