Asking or answering questions in FamilySearch Community

Post a question from the home page

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch.
  2. In the top-right, click the circle with a question mark.
  3. At the bottom of the new box, click Community.
  4. Look in the top-right. If you see "Sign in", click it to sign in to Community.
  5. On the right panel under Categories, browse the list of categories and click the one that best applies to your question.
  6. In the center, you see previous questions. Look through them to see if someone else asked your question already.

Someone else asked my question

  1. Click the title to open the post.
  2. Look at the answers.
  3. To add to the discussion, find the Leave a Comment box. Enter your comments and click Post Comment.

My question is new

  1. Click Ask a Question.
  2. Fill in each box and click Ask Question.

Post a question in a group

  1. On the top panel, click Groups.
  2. Find the group.
  3. Click Join to become a member of the group.
  4. Most groups begin with resources and announcements. Scroll to find New Discussion and click the down arrow to the right of the button.
  5. Click Ask a Question.
  6. Fill in each field and click Ask Question.

Edit your post

  1. If you notice an error in your post, to the right of the title, click the Three Dots.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Make your corrections and click Save.

Review answer to your post

Answers show below your post. Below an answer you see "Did this answer the question?" If you feel this is a good answer, click Yes. Now this answer appears at the top of the discussion. Group moderators know that you have an answer to your question.

If you later see a better answer, click Yes for the better answer to pin it to the top of the discussion.

Answer questions or add to a discussion

  1. When you see a question you can help with, click the title to open the discussion.
  2. Scroll to find the Leave a Comment box and enter your answer or comment. Use the icons to add Emojis, images, or files.
  3. Click Post Comment.

Quote a comment in your post

If you want to add to an answer someone else posted or ask a follow up question, use the steps above for answering questions. You can click Quote below another post if you want to include it in your post. This puts the other comment at the beginning of your comment.

Bookmark a discussion

In the top-right of a discussion title, click the ribbon icon to bookmark the discussion.

Find bookmarks

  1. On the right panel, locate Quick Links.
  2. On the right, click My Bookmarks.
  3. Click a title to open the discussion.
