How do I add step, adopted, and foster parents to a child in Family Tree?

You can include more than one set of parents for a person, such as the biological and the adoptive parents. One way to do this is by adding the parents to the child's record.

Steps (website)

  1. While signed into FamilySearch, click Family Tree.
  2. If possible, navigate to the parents and note the ID numbers.
  3. Navigate back to the Tree view and click Find in the top banner.
  4. Enter search terms or click Find by ID if you know the ID number of the child. In the search results, click the child to bring up the person card.
  5. Click Person.
  6. If the Details section is not open, click the Details tab.
  7. Scroll to the Family Members section.
  8. Under Parents and Siblings, click Add Parent.
  9. Enter search terms or click Find by ID Number if you know the ID number of one of the parents.
  10. Click Find.
  11. Review the results.
    • Click Add Couple to add both parents to the child.
    • Click Create Person to use the information in your search entry to add the parent's record into Family Tree.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. In the Family Tree mobile app, navigate to the Person page of the parents, if possible, and note the ID numbers.
  2. Navigate back to the Tree view and tap the search icon in the top, right corner.
  3. Enter search terms or tap Find by ID if you know the ID number of the child. Tap Find.
  4. In the search results, tap the child to bring up their Person page.
  5. Tap Parents.
  6. Scroll to bottom and tap Add Parent.
  7. Enter search terms or tap either Find by ID or Add by ID if you know the ID number of one of the parents.
  8. Tap Continue.
  9. Indicate whether the parent is living or deceased. Tap Continue.
  10. Review the possible matches.
    • Tap Add or Add Match.
    • Tap Add This Person or Add to use the information in your search entry to add the parent's record into Family Tree.

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

  1. While signed into Family Tree Lite, navigate to the Person page of the parents, if possible, and note the ID numbers.
  2. Click the search icon in the top banner.
  3. Enter search terms or click ID if you know the ID number of the child. (Family Search Lite does not automatically add the hyphen into or capitalize the letters of the ID. This must be done manually.)
  4. Click Find.
  5. In the search results, click the child to bring up their Person page.
  6. Under the child's name, click View Family.
  7. Under Parents and Siblings, click Add Another Parent.
  8. Enter search terms or click Find by ID Number if you know the ID number of the parent.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Review the possible matches.
    • Click Add Person.
    • Click Create Person to use the information in your search entry to add the parent's record into Family Tree.

When you are done

When a child is linked to more than one set of parents, it is helpful to set a relationship type to clarify how the child is related to each parent.
