How do I add Other Information in Family Tree with JAWS?

If Family Tree does not provide a field for the type of information that you want to add, you can add your own custom field.

Custom events are especially helpful if they meet the following criteria:

  • The information is significant.
  • The information helps distinguish the person from other people with similar names.
  • The information is helpful for identifying the person in records.

Perform the Following Steps to add a custom event or fact:

  1. Sign in to Family Tree, https://familysearch.org/tree.
  2. Go to the Details page for the person you want to add a custom event for. This can be done using the Find command, by using the Person drop-down list, or by moving to a person already present on the Tree or Details page.
  3. Move to the custom event section. This is found under the heading Other Information. You can find this heading by pressing H until you hear “Other Information.” You can also move to “Other Information” using the JAWS Virtual Find command or from the Headings list.
  4. Press the Down Arrow to move to the Add link under Other Information, and press Enter to select it.  At this point, JAWS will not display the list of custom events shown on the screen. However, JAWS will repeat the name of the link to let you know it has been selected.
  5. Route JAWS to PC and press the Down Arrow 2 or 3 times to display the list of events. JAWS will speak the first or second item on the list. It usually takes a few seconds for the list to be displayed.
  6. Move the focus to the PC cursor. To do this, route the PC cursor to the JAWS cursor.
  7. Press the Down Arrow to move to the event or fact to add, and press Enter to bring up the fields for the event. If the event or fact you want to add is not present on the list, select Custom Event or Custom Fact. If you need date and place fields, select Custom Event. Otherwise, select Custom Fact.
  8. Press Tab to move through the fields, and enter the information for each field. All of the fields are labeled.
  9. After you have entered all of the information, press Tab until you reach the Explain why you feel this information is correct field, and provide the requested information.
  10. Press Tab to move to the Save button, and press Spacebar to select it. If you decide not to save the custom event, press Tab to move to the Cancel link, and press Enter to select it. After selecting the Save button or the Cancel link, you are returned to the person’s Details page.

Note: If you have difficulty getting JAWS to echo “Add link” after you select it, or if you cannot bring up the custom event list when you route the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor, try restoring the page. To do this, press Alt+Spacebar to bring up the system menu followed by R to restore the page.
