How do I add custom events and facts to a person in Family Tree?

Sometimes Family Tree does not provide a field for the type of information you want to add to a person. You can add a custom event or fact. Here are examples of custom material:

  • Occupation
  • Military service
  • Religious affiliation
  • Residences

Steps (website)

Landscape, Portrait, Fan Chart, and Descendancy Views

  1. At the top of the page, click Family Tree, and then click Tree. 
  2. Find the person that you want to enhance.
  3. Click the person's name. In the details that pop up, click the person's name again.
  4. Click the Details tab.
  5. Scroll to Other Information.
  6. Click one of the options:
    1. + Add Alternate Name
    2. + Add Event (events are information that includes a date and place)
    3. + Add Fact (facts are information that does not include a date and place)
  7. For an event or fact, select the type of event or fact from the list.
  8. Enter information.
  9. Include a clear explanation of how you know the information is correct.
  10. Click Save.
  11. If you have a source, attach it to show that the information is correct. 

First Ancestor View

  1. At the top of the page, click Family Tree and then Tree. 
  2. Find the person.
  3. Click the person's name.
  4. In the side sheet, scroll down to the Events or Facts section.
  5. Click Add Event or Add Fact.
  6. Scroll down in the list until you find Custom Event or Custom Fact.
    • To add information that includes a date and place, click Custom Event.
    • To add information that does not include a date and place, click Custom Fact.
  7. Enter information.
  8. Include a clear explanation of how you know the information is correct.
  9. Click Save.
  10. If you have a source, attach it to show that the information is correct. 

Steps (mobile app)

  1. In the Family Tree mobile app, navigate to the Person page for the individual.
  2. Select the Details tab.
  3. In the lower right, tap the circle with + .
  4. Under Add Other Information, tap Custom Event. (Custom Fact is not available on the mobile app.)
  5. Enter information.
  6. Include a clear explanation of how you know the information is correct.
  7. Tap Save.
  8. If you have a source, attach it to show that the information is correct.

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

In Family Tree Lite, you can add only vital information. The Other Information section is not available.
