Descendants of Joseph P. Hale (died 1803) and Benjamin Hale Sr. who may have been brothers. Joseph was in Halifax County, Virginia in 1764. He later died in Patrick County, Virginia in 1803. Three of his sons settled in Kentucky, Benjamin (ca. 1774-1829, married Mary Hollandsworth) in Magoffin County; Joseph Jr. (born ca. 1757, married Elizabeth Turman) in Floyd County; and Peter (ca. 1773-1834, married Sarah Morris) in Floyd County. Benjamin Hale Sr. was in Henry County, Virginia (later Franklin County) in 1784. His son, Benjamin Jr. (ca. 1764-1810), married Dicy Franklin and died in Lee County, Virginia. John Hale (born ca. 1775) settled near Prestonburg, Kentucky. Descendants lived in Virginia, Kentucky, Iowa, Indiana, Nebraska, and elsewhere.
The second volume contains the descendants of Jacob Shepherd, born in 1781 in Virginia who married Elizabeth Hale and David Shepherd (1793-1873), born in Virginia, who married (1) Lucretia Hale and (2) Rebecca Bradley. Both settled in Magoffin County, Kentucky after 1813, coming from Lee County, Virginia. David later died in Breathitt County, Kentucky. Elizabeth and Lucretia were the daughters of Benjamin Hale, Jr. (died 1810) and Dicy Franklin. Descendants lived in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, and elsewhere.
