Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Porter families who came mainly from England, France, Ireland, and Scotland. Some allied families came from Germany. Some Porters immigrated first to Canada, then into the United States of America. In the early 1600s, some immigrated to Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia (especially Jamestown). In the 1700s, some settled in Kentucky, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Vermont. In 1784, some Porters settled at Mossy Creek in Augusta County, Virginia, and built the historic Nimrod Hall. Around 1832, other Porters settled in Aroostock County, Maine where they established another historic "Porter homestead." Later descendants also lived in Alberta and British Columbia (Canada), Germany, and in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Washington, and elsewhere. Names of slaves are given. Some have American Indian bloodlines; some have African American bloodlines. Information is extracted from birth records, biographical sketches, cemetery inscriptions, census records, church registers, court records, death records, deeds, land records, marriage records, military records, newspapers, obituaries, occupational records, pensions, probates, shared genealogies, tax records, and from published registers and indexes.
