James Gordon, son of James Gordon and Sarah Greenway, was born in Sheepbridge, Scotland. He emigrated to the colony of Virginia before 1738 and married Milicent Conway on 28 March 1742. She was the daughter of Colonel Edwin and Ann Conway. Later, James Gordon married Mary Harrison, daughter of Colonel Nathaniel Harrison, on 12 November 1748. He died around 1768 in Virginia.
