By January 1853, the New York Juvenile Asylum opened a House of Reception to accomodate children who were orphaned, or had parents unable or unfit to care for them, or who were otherwise without homes. The Department of Charities determined that children would benefit from being sent to Illinois where they were apprenticed to farm families. Children between ages 7-14 were sent to Illinois from 1853 until the fall of 1898. The names and facts are extracted from records of the Asylum and their reports from the families or the children who were apprenticed.

Includes name of child, place and date of birth, age, date of trip, family taking child, address, informant, and a reference to file if more information is available.
