Thomas Sawyer, an emigrant from Lancashire, England, was one of the original settlers of Lancaster, Massachusetts, in 1644. He died at Lancaster in 1706, at age 90. His descendant of the fourth generation, Thomas Sawyer (1741-1796), a captain in the Revolutionary War, was born at Bolton, Massachusetts, the son of Thomas Sawyer (b. 1691). He married Prudence Carter (1747-1818) in 1762 at Harvard, Massachusetts, and settled at Templeton, Massachusetts. They had ten children, 1764-1790. The family moved to Winchendon, Massachusetts, in 1771; to Clarendon, Vermont, ca. 1777; to Salisbury, Vermont, in 1783; and to Manchester, Ontario County, New York, in 1794. He died at Manchester. Descendants listed of his son, Joseph Sawyer (1777-1861), lived in New York, Michigan, Ohio, and elsewhere.

Includes the Tilden, Randall and other allied families.
