Erich Bach of Freudenberg (born ca.1540/1550) of Germany is the oldest known ancestor of the Bach or Back family of Kentucky, Virginia. He had two known sons, Johan Bach (born ca. 1570/1575) and Henrich Bach (born ca. 1575/1580). Hermann Bach (also known as Harman Back), was the son of Johan or Johannes Bach III and Anna Margretha Kray. Hermann was christened in Freudenberg, Germany in 1708. In 1737, Hermann married Anna Margarethe Hausmann in Bottenberg. They immigrated to Virginia in 1738, and settled on the Little Fork of the Rappahannock River. They had four sons, all born in Virginia within a few years after their arrival. Two of their sons and several of their grandsons moved to Kentucky after the end of the Revolutionary War. Hermann also moved to Kentucky at the age of ninety. This book contains records of Hermann Bach's German ancestors, and the descendants through his four sons.
