The author's parental grandparents, Charles Pearson (1830-1896) and Eliza Ann Robertson Pearson (1832-1914) migrated from Missouri in 1857 and settled in Grizzly Valley, near Sacramento, California. There they established a hotel and cottages at a place named Pearson's Springs. Their eldest son, William James Pearson, migrated to Oregon, ca. 1878 and purchased a farm in Douglas County, Oregon. Charles and Eliza Ann Pearson migrated to Oregon in 1894 and settled at Hudson, later Leona, Douglas County. They died at Cottage Grove, Oregon. The author's maternal grandfather, William Coddigan Miller (1833-1918), was born at Crawfordville, Indiana, and migrated to Oregon in 1848. He married Rudama Walters (1846-1933) at Salem, Oregon in 1863. They had ten children, 1864-1887. Their daughter, Rhoda Miller (1864-1942), married William J. Pearson (1849-1931) in 1883 at Drain, Oregon. They had two sons, 1885-1887. The author was their younger son. Hugh Francis Pearson (1887-1977) was born near Leona, Oregon. His family moved to Winchester, Oregon, in 1894. He married Effie Maude Birdsall (1884-1977), a native of Gowrie, Iowa, and the daughter of Henry and Sarah Fisher Birdsall, in 1908. They had four children, 1910-1921, born at Winchester. Much of the narrative concerns the author's memories of his life, living at Winchester and fishing on the Columbia River. Most genealogical information was added by his son, Elmer F. Pearson. Hugh and Effie Maud Pearson died at Portland, Oregon. Children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren live in Oregon and Washington.
