Richard Hewitt (1605-1622), was born at Chrislet, Kent, England, the son of Richard and Francis Epes Hewitt. He immigrated to Virginia in 1621. He and his small son, John, were killed in an Indian massacre at Captain Berkley's Planatation. His son, Thomas Hewitt, was born shortly after the massacre. Record chiefly follows line of descent to John Allen Hewett (1862-1937), who was born in Gordon County, Georgia, the son of Caleb Hewitt (1825-1909) and Permelia Campbell Hewitt (1833-1901). He and his wife, Mary Lucinda Paralee Looney (1870-1951) had ten children, before 1891-1912. born in Georgia and Texas. John Allen and Mary Hewett are buried in Laural Land Cemetery, Dallas, Texas. His daughter, Minnie Ethel Hewett (1898-1976) married Charley Cleveland Pritchett (1892-1932). They were the author's parents. The surname is spelled Hewitt and Hewett.

Includes other ancestral lines of the author's grandfather. Ancestors include: James Campbell (b. 1715) of Cowan County, North Carolina, and Knox, Tennessee; and James Dillard (1716-1790), and his son, James Dillard (1736-1798) of Virginia and North Carolina, a major in the Revolutionary War.
