Mitchell Clay (1735-1812) was the son of William Clay. He married Phoebe Belcher in 1760 in probably Chesterfield County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Richard Belcher of Chesterfield Co. Soon after their marriage they most likely traveled to what is now Franklin Co. Va., with other settlers from Chesterfield Co. When Mitchell Clay settled on the Clover Bottom land in 1775 he was the second settler in what is now Mercer Co., West Virginia. He and Phoebe had fourteen known children. Phoeby died 1809. The emigrant ancestor, Capt. John Thomas Clay (1587-1656), was born in England. He immigrated to Virginia.
