Nancy Ward was born in 1738 to Tame Doe, a member of the Wolf Clan of the Cherokees, and a member of the Delaware Indian Tribe. Nancy's Indian name was Nanye'hi. In 1752, Nancy married Kingfisher of the Deer Clan. They had two children, Catherine and Fivekiller. Nancy's husband was killed in 1755 in the Battle of Taliwa. Because of her valor she honored as "Beloved Woman" of her tribe. In 1758, Nancy married Bryan Ward and they had a daughter, Elizabeth, who later married Joseph Martin. About 1759 Bryan left his wife and daughter to return home to the Pendleton District of South Carolina. Nancy died in 1824 at the age of 86.
