This is a collection of letters written to James Rowbotham (1822-1876) in Nelson, New Zealand, between the years 1843 to 1864. The majority of letters are from his mother, Charlotte Rowbotham of Werneth, near Hyde in Cheshire. James Rowbotham sailed for Nelson on the "Martha Ridgway" in November of 1841, having recently married Elizabeth Waterhouse in Oldham, Lancashire. With them on the ship were Elizabeth's parents, Thomas and Sarah Waterhouse. James's oldest child, Charlotte, was born in Nelson in February 1843.
