John and Henri Cocheu, brothers, emigrated from Paimpol, Côte-du-Nord, Brittany, France, to America in 1820 and settled in New York City. They were the sons of Yves Auguste Cocheu (ca. 1760-1836) and Marie Jeanne Jacob Cocheu (d. 1836).
John Cocheu, older brother, was born ca. 1790, in Paimpol. He moved to Freeschool, Robins Neck, Gloucester Co., Virginia, about 1828. He married Elizabeth Ikler of Baltimore, Maryland (d. 1863). They had a daughter, Lucretia Jane (1824-1866), who married Francis Buck in 1845; and two sons. The sons died unmarried. John died in Washington, D.C., in 1854, while teaching school in that city. Descendants (surname Buck) lived in Virginia and elsewhere.
Henri Cocheu, was born at Paimpol, France, 6 Sept. 1794. As a boy, in 1808, he was conscripted as a clarinetist in the Army of Napoleon. He married at New York City, Catherine Youmans (1807-1875), daughter of Frederick Youmans and Elizabeth Uptegrove Youmans, in 1827. They had ten children. Between 1845 and 1850, the family moved to the eastern district of Brooklyn, New York. Henri died there in 1863. Descendants lived in New York, Ohio, New Jersey,.
