John Zalud was born in Bohemia in 1851. He came with his family to America in 1866 and settled in Chicago near the Herdlicka family. In 1872 John went to California and three years later he was followed by Mary Herdlicka whom he married in 1875. They had six children, three died in infancy. THe family moved to Porterville, California where they became prominent members of the community. Sketches of the three children who grew to adulthood are also included in this material. None of the children had any descendants.
