James William MacLaughn was born in 1758 at Kingston, Jamaica, the son of John MacLaughn. His father died when he was fifteen and he sailed on a ship to Boston in 1773 or 1774. To avoid legal problems, he changed his name to William Laughn, and later Anglicised it to William Lowing. He was living at Gouchester, Rhode Island, when he enlisted in the Massachusetts Minute Men and later the Rhode Island Militia and the Continental Line. He left the army in 1779 and migrated west to Vermant. He married Anna Haight in 1780. They had twelve children, 1781-1802. The family lived in Danby and Tinmouth, Vermont, and migrated to Peru, New York, in 1797. He died in 1802. Descendants lived in New York, Vermont, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, and elsewhere.
Includes the Haight, Lampman, Davis, Vaughn, and other related families.
Includes MacLaughn ancestors of William Lowing in Scotland.
With: Michigan Lowing history.
