John Bishop (1709-1815) was the son of Eleazar Bishop and Sarah Dart, who immigrated from England to Connecticut ca. 1692. John was born in New London, Connecticut. He had four sons, who also were born in New London. They were: Captain William Bishop (1732-1815), Deacon Peter Bishop (1735-1826), Colonel John Bishop Jr. (1736-1815) and Timothy Bishop (1740-1827). John Sr. and his four sons moved to Horton, Nova Scotia, in 1760, as part of the New England Planters who settled in Nova Scotia after the expulsion of the Acadians. Some of their later descendants also lived in Alberta, British Columbia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan (Canada), and in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Maine, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and elsewhere in the United States and Canada.
