This microfiche collection "includes basic reference works on the war history of each state and features some 2,000 personal histories and other narratives, most written by Union and Confederate citizen soldiers in the home-state units that did the bulk of the fighting. The collection covers unit histories and narratives published from 1861 to 1920"--Publisher's brochure.

This microfiche collection "encompasses the unit histories and personal narratives printed from 1861 through 1920 as listed in Charles E. Dornbusch's Military Bibliography of the Civil War. Not all histories cited by Dornbusch could be found for this publication... [The publisher] has included items that were not listed by Dornbusch but were found while performing research for this publication... Histories of specific units, actions by these units, and/or an individual's exploits with his unit during the war years, 1861-1865, are included in this publication. In addition, personal narratives are included if they consist primarily of an individual's life during the Civil War. General reference works, state and federal adjutant general's office reports, state histories of the war and compilations of unit histories, and excerpts pertaining to Union forces raised in the Northern, border, and select Southern states, from Frederick H. Dyer's Compendium of the War of the Rebellion, have been included. A General References category appears at the beginning of each state's section. Part 1 includes the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Higher/Independent commands and Confederate States Navy.
