Diaries of John Hunton (1829-1928), son of Alexander B. Hunton and Mary Elizabeth Carpenter, who was born in Madison County, Virginia. He served with the south during the Civil War, and later moved to the western frontier, where he eventually became a post trader at old Fort Laramie, Laramie County, Wyoming. His diaries are "... a many sided story of the cattle industry since its inception in Wyoming; the last of the Indian wars; the passing of the stage coach and the building of the railroads; the disaster of the 80's which spelled finis for the early cattle barons; range wars and homesteading; the gradual development of irrigation; farming and modern ranching; of history, politics and government." (v. 1, p. 11).
