Thomas Jernigan and his three sons, Thomas, John, and Henry, emigrated from England to America. They lived in Nansemond County, Virginia, and they called the place Somerley after the location of their home in England. Thomas later migrated north to New England and John and Henry south to North Carolina. Henry Jernegan purchased 100 acres 100 acres on Catawasky Pocosin, Chowan County, North Carolina, in 1716. Henry's great-grandson, Alexander C. Jernigan was born about 1779 in North Carolina, the son of Cary Jernigan. He married Elizabeth (Farmer?) in Johnston County, North Carolina, in 1803. They had 10 children. In 1806, they moved to Tennessee where they settled in Rutherford County and later moved to Coffee County. Alexander died in 1864 at the home of his son in Bedford County.
