Descendants of James Hales, Sr. (b. before 1765), who married on Sept. 9, 1791 Esther Scott (b. after 1765) in Eastville, Northampton Co., Virginia. James was one of the first settlers of Knox Co., Kentucky. This couple had seven children: Hugh (b. ca. 1784), married 1812 Margaret (Peggy) Higgins; James, Jr. (b. ca. 1794), married 1814 Betsy Athey, daughter of John Athey; Thomas (ca. 1796-1876), married 1822 Mary Hammons; William (b. ca. 1799), married 1821 Nelly Bibbins, daughter of Elijah Bibbins; Lucy Ann (b. ca. 1800), married 1824 William Stout; Rochester (b. ca. 1820), married 1829 (1) Margaret Hammons, daughter of Peter, (2) 1835 Elizabeth Hammons, daughter of Obediah; Elizabeth (b. ca. 1805), married William Bullock. Descendants born around 1850 and after use spelling Hale. Descendants live in Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana, Virginia and elsewhere.

Includes related families of Athey and Cottengim, etc.
