Borden of Wilmington, N.C.
The Mead ancestors of Charles E. Borden were of English origin and were not related to the Meade families who were the ancestors of Rev. William Meade, Protestant Episcopal Bishop of Virginia, or General George Gordon Meade. Rev. Meade's ancestor, Andrew Meade (ca. 1680-1745) emigrated from Ireland, settled first in New York, and then migrated to Nansemond County, Virginia. General Meade's ancestor, Robert Meade (d. 1754), was born in Ireland, married in Barbadoes, and died at Philadelphia.
Charles E. Borden was a descendant of Richard Mead of Mursley, Buckinghamshire, England, through his second son, Rev. Matthew Mead (1629-1699). Rev. Mead's great grandson, Col. William Mead (1737-1805) was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Mary Arbrell Mead. He migrated to Virginia with his father, ca. 1746. He served with the militia and the contental army during the Revoltionary War. He married twice and was the father of thirteen children, 1752-1782. Most of the family moved to Georgia in 1785. Children and grandchildren listed lived in Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, Alabama, and elsewhere.
