Archibald Stuart was born in Londonderry about the latter part of the 17th century. He married Jane (or Janet) Brown. After a son and a daughter had been born, about 1726, he became involved in some rebellious movement growing of of religious persecutions and was compelled to flee from his native land, leaving his family behind him. He found refuge in western Pennsylvania where he remained for about seven years until an act of amnesty made it possible for his to send for his family. Two more sons were born in Pennsylvania. In 1737 of 1738, the family moved to Augusta County, Virginia, where he lived until his death in 1761. Descendants lived in Virginia, Tennessee and elsewhere.
