A letter by the State Record Commissioner of 1916 reads "I have examined with great care the original manuscripts of the census for 1777 and I find that the following towns are omitted: Exeter, Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, New Shoreham and Portsmouth. Undoubtedly this was due to the occupation of the British.".
